Buying Prescription Medicine: Choose Online Pharmacies Carefully

Technology and innovation help people become more productive, live comfortably, and enjoy plenty of amenities. Even if the pandemic is still raging, the online environment is very much alive, where people can consult with their doctors virtually, get prescriptions and buy medicines. Many things are now processed and conducted virtually. While this is an effective mode of communication and commerce, people should follow some safety protocols.

One aspect in which the consumer should be careful is healthcare. Many doctors now offer virtual consultations for minor ailments, and patients can get their prescriptions online. They can purchase their medicines online, as well. There are some medicines that you can purchase from online pharmacies without a prescription.

But you should be careful in choosing the pharmacies when purchasing your prescription drugs online. For one thing, only a qualified health professional can dispense prescription-only medicines, including antibiotics.

Why you should be careful when buying medicine online

It would be best if you had confidence in the pharmacy that sells prescription medicine due to the proliferation of fake medicines that some online pharmacies sell. Make sure that you trust the pharmacy, particularly if you want to buy antibiotics online.

The Imperial College London released the results of their study indicating that several online pharmacies in the UK contribute to the escalation of antibiotic resistance by allowing consumers to purchase antibiotics without prescription.

To avoid this issue, the National Health Services (NHS) recommends buying antibiotics and other medicine from the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)-registered online pharmacies. They should be registered with the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Moreover, patients should consult with online doctors who are registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Ingredients in medicines vary

Online consumers need to buy medicines, particularly prescription-only medicines like antibiotics, from reputable online pharmacies. Ingredients in medicine vary, and if you are not careful, you may purchase antibiotics that are not right for you, which can cause harmful side effects.

Your GP prescribes a certain antibiotic to cure you of your illness, by following the recommended dosage for a specific duration. However, some online pharmacies are allowing patients to choose the duration and antibiotic dosages.

The practice is very risky as it can lead to antibiotic resistance, meaning the next time you contract the same bacterial infection, the effect of the antibiotic prescribed to fight off the disease may be reduced or eliminated. If this is the case, it will be more difficult for you to get well.

Buy only from registered online pharmacies

You might be thinking that you can save when you purchase your antibiotics from any online pharmacy. But that may not be the case. Since many of the medicine sold online are not regulated, you can only be sure that you are buying the right medicine from a legitimate pharmacy. You can be sure that the medicines they sell are tested.

It would help if you did not put your health at risk to save a little. If your illness worsens, you will be spending more on treatment and medication.

Using antibiotics should not be abused. Buy from a legitimate online pharmacy. See to it that you follow your GP’s prescription, use the exact dosage and consume your antibiotic continuously during the duration of your treatment.
