iPhone Black Screen: 5 Common Causes and Fixes

on

Are you struggling to turn your phone on after it’s turned off? Do you suspect that your phone is still on but that the screen is completely black? If so, then you need to learn what to do when you’re dealing with an iPhone black screen.

There are common iPhone problems that are probably at fault. Maybe you dropped it on the floor. Perhaps you accidentally spilled some water on it. Whatever the case, it pays to know what happened when your iPhone screen went black.

See below for several common iPhone problems that you might be dealing with and how you can fix them.

1. Your Display Is Disconnected

If your iPhone screen has gone black, then the most likely culprit is that something went wrong with the LCD cable.

Either the display connector got dislodged from its position or something within your phone’s mainframe has broken. This is a common occurrence when people drop their phone on a solid surface, especially when it lands on one side of the phone.

For those of you that are experiencing a black screen after you got your phone wet, it most likely means that the LCD is completely shot. In that case, you’ll need to get it replaced before it can be used again.

Make sure to check and see if this replacement is covered by your phone insurance (if you have it). Otherwise, it might be cheaper to get a new phone instead.

2. Your Phone Got Wet

You can generally tell when an unforeseen event has caused your phone’s screen to go completely black.

For example, if you dropped your phone in water or accidentally got it wet some other way, then your screen will go black almost instantaneously.

If you know that to be the problem, then your main concern (assuming you want to save the phone) is to get the water out. To do that, you’ll have to use the common home remedy of dunking your phone into a bag full of dry rice.

Take a Ziploc bag and fill it full of dry rice, then stick your phone in and make sure that it’s completely covered and surrounded. Seal the bag and keep it in there for at least 24 hours. 36 hours if you want to be as efficient as possible.

Some people swear that this method works, others don’t. The truth is that this method does work, but it depends on a case by case basis. Some phones got too wet for them to be saved.

The dry rice in an enclosed space will suck up the moisture from the phone. As the water in the phone tries to condensate, it will be removed from the phone completely.

3. Your Phone Turned Off

There are certain circumstances in which your phone will automatically turn off on its own doing. It might do this if the phone gets too hot or too cold to prevent further damage. Maybe your phone battery just died after hitting 0-percent battery life.

No matter what the reason for turning off by itself, you might run into the problem of not being able to turn it back on.

If this is happening to you, don’t stress. There could be a few reasons why the phone won’t turn back on.

The most likely reason is that the phone’s battery is completely dead. Try charging the phone for at least 20-minutes before trying to turn it on again.

This can also happen after you’ve hit your iPhone or dropped it on a hard surface. When that happens, take the phone out of its case and search for any signs of damage. You’ll most likely have to visit an iPhone repair store to fix it.

4. Software Has Crashed

iOS is one of the most innovative and secure phone software out there, but even it has its moments of glitching and failures.

If you notice that your phone’s screen went black for no apparent reason, then it could be due to the phone’s software crashing. Whenever that happens, the phone will automatically turn off to prevent further damage.

The good news is that this can normally be fixed with a hard reset. For an iPhone 8 or newer model, press and hold down the volume up, volume down, and side button all at once until you see the Apple logo.

When the phone turns back on, the screen should appear to be back to normal. If not, then turn the phone back off and take it to the nearest iPhone repair store.

5. Unorthodox Issue

If you can’t get to the bottom of your iPhone black screen, then be sure to call your phone provider to ask more questions. You might be dealing with something unusual that caused your screen to go black.

More often than not, they’ll give you an idea of what the problem is and what your options are, and whether they’re covered by your phone insurance.

You might also try to contact a third-party repair shop. They can give you an estimate of what it would cost to fix the issue.
