The Importance of Shopping Locally

Published

on

Some people have gotten so used to shopping online that they don’t even know what stores are in their town. Unless you can buy it on Amazon, they won’t even shop in the stores. Whether your town is filled with small businesses or is dominated by chains, it helps to shop locally to improve the local economy and keep industries in your area strong. What most people don’t realize is that the businesses in a community help to keep an area strong. If local businesses start shutting down it lowers property values and so much more. Here are some of the most important reasons to shop locally.

Shopping Locally Keeps Tax Dollars in Your Area

While no one likes to pay taxes, the truth is that they help keep things like roads and buildings in good repair. Additionally, sales tax dollars sometimes go toward special projects and parks in some communities that make that area desirable to live in. When you buy online, you don’t necessarily pay taxes which means that those dollars don’t go back into your community. If you want your tax dollars to be put to use where you need them the most, it’s best to shop local.

Help The Environment

Ordering online might seem like an eco-friendly thing to do, but in reality, the results are mixed. A lot more waste goes into boxing up and shipping a product than getting something from the store in town. Plus, when you shop for things like clothes and shoes, you can be sure to get the right fit which means you won’t be running back and forth or shipping things back to return them. If you aren’t sure where to find something unique, you can always Google “shoe stores near me” or “boutique shops near me”. This way you can find out what local businesses have to offer before you start searching online.

Improve Job Opportunities in Your Area

People who constantly shop online don’t think about the impact on local jobs when they do so. Shopping online keeps money out of the hands of local retailers. These retailers who don’t get enough business often have to cut hours or cut employees altogether in order to stay afloat. When more people shop locally, businesses large and small are able to offer more jobs to the locals and create a robust community. Want to get more jobs in your area, then buy more things in your area.

Find Special Gifts

Finding something a little different than the mass-produced products you find at many local stores can be one of the most exciting parts of shopping local. There are so many unique artisans and products that you can’t find anywhere else. Getting a special gift for a friend, for a wedding, or for a baby can make the receiver feel like you went the extra mile to find them something they’d love. There are stores in almost every town that have truly unique gifts and custom-made items for any occasion.

Support Nonprofits

Many towns have food banks and other community organizations that rely on generous business donors to function. While you may not realize it, more than 90% of small businesses give to charities with many of them focusing on giving to local charities. Without these businesses, many of them would not be able to help the people in your community who need it the most. If you want your money to help support local nonprofits, then support local businesses as well. Even chain businesses are often known to give locally, especially if they are independently owned franchises.

Enjoy the Shopping Experience

Going to local boutiques and stores usually means that you’ll get great customer service from knowledgeable salespeople. And often, you’ll have a chance to meet the owner in person. This type of customer service was once the norm. They asked if you were looking for anything special, helped you locate the things you needed, and even greeted you with a warm smile. This is the kind of service you can expect in a small business. You’ll enjoy the shopping experience far more than just going to a big box store and you’ll be part of helping your community and the people in it live and thrive.
