Home edit: How to reorganise your kitchen storage and layout so it works more efficiently

Published

Now is the perfect time of year to get your kitchen cupboards organised. Why? In the run up to Christmas we all become much busier, leaving little to no time to get ourselves sorted before the festivities begin! Whether you’re in the mood for a full storage and layout overhaul, or only want to make a couple of changes, here are a few ways that you can achieve the most organised kitchen you’ve ever had.

Before you begin ripping things out of the cupboard however, you need to make sure you have some storage essentials. Start by making an online shopping list. Sites like Amazon, Ikea and other homeware stores will have pretty much everything you need. Set your budget beforehand to help you stay on track and make sure you don’t overspend.

Storage essentials you may need:

  • Utensil tray
  • Cookware organiser
  • Over-cabinet kitchen storage organiser
  • Spice rack
  • Food container organiser
  • Can rack
  • Glass jars

How to organise your cupboards

First things first, throw out everything that’s dirty, stale or past its expiry date. Give your fridge a deep clean as well as your cupboards – you’d be surprised how much dirt they collect!

Once you’ve done this, you can decide where everything is going to live. You may even find you have more space to play with than you did before thanks to your initial throw out. If you have spices, consider popping them into a spice rack to keep them organised – this will also make it easier for you to find what you need when you need it.

If you don’t have a pan drawer, a cookware organiser will save you so much space. Expandable ones allow you to store pretty much every kind of pan, skillet and casserole dish if you get one big enough. These can sit in a drawer or even in one of your bottom kitchen cupboards.

Another great storage solution is a cutlery tray. If you don’t own one of these, it will quite possibly change your life. Find everything when you need it and feel satisfied knowing that everything has its place in your drawers.

How to utilise your space better

There are a number of ways you can utilise your space better. Your kitchen can offer so much more storage capacity than you might think. By doing simple things like popping your mugs onto hooks under your wall cupboards will help to create additional space in your cupboards for other bits and bobs.

Another genius hack if you have limited counter space is to grab yourself a chopping board that fits over your sink. As worktop space is always at a premium, especially if you have multiple appliances out and about, this is a great space-saving alternative!

Have cupboard doors that aren’t being used? Why not get some over-the-door organisers to keep things in? You could use them for your cleaning products, baking trays and so much more. Keep things off your kitchen worktops to help maximise your overall space.
