Music and Its Healing Powers

Published

on

It is almost impossible to find anyone who does not like music. We may all have our favorite genres, but the love for music is universal, whether you are a musician or a music lover. Music can bring back good memories, lift the spirit, help cope with heartbreak, and soothe an anxious mind. It has the unique ability to evoke different emotions and always be there for you no matter how you feel.

For this reason, people turn to music on their way to work, listen to it to unwind at the end of a long day, or keep it playing in the background day and night, no matter what they may be doing. Others enjoy singing, composing, or playing a musical instrument such as the banjo and developing a personal style like clawhammer banjo classics.

More than that, music is proven to have healing powers that not many know of. In fact, music therapy has become increasingly popular over the years, as more and more people recognize the many benefits of music in enhancing the quality of life and hastening the healing process of various health conditions.

Music helps patients suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s

Music is well-known for being beneficial for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Although these conditions cause memory loss, patients will never forget the music that has been a part of their lives. They may no longer recall the names and faces of the people closest to them or find it challenging to verbalize certain words, but familiar melodies will always remain. When they hear music in the background, there is a significant improvement in the patient’s mood, and they are less agitated. Whatever stage of dementia a patient may be in, they will relate music to fond memories that put them in a happier state of mind.

Music helps fight depression and anxiety

Depression and anxiety can directly cause various health conditions that can end up in tragic consequences. Music enhances the state of mind, reduces stress levels, and gives an overall feeling of well-being. The melodies and lyrics of songs convey messages that make you more positive about your life and whatever situation you may find yourself in. It helps you focus as you work, is the perfect companion when you are lonely, and accompanies you in whatever activities you are involved in. While listening to music, you forget things that make you sad. Instead, it re-energizes you and helps you cope with the daily stresses you experience.

Music eases the pain and discomfort of surgical procedures

Patients who undergo surgical procedures will often feel anxious before an operation, worried about the pain and the result of the surgery. Music helps ease that discomfort, keeping patients calmer before and during surgery. Some even required less sedation because of the calming effect of music playing in the background while the procedure was going on.

There is no question that music is a natural healer. It makes life easier for people suffering from all sorts of health problems, aiding in recovery and maintaining a more optimistic view of life.
