Employee retention strategies: how to stop the Great Resignation?

Published

on

The Great Resignation, also known as the Great Reshuffle or the Big Quit, is an ongoing trend that involves people voluntarily resigning from their jobs in large numbers. It began in early 2021, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and has continued till this day. Are there ways to prevent it from growing stronger? There are, but it’s important to be aware of the reasons for it in the first place – and then act accordingly.

Factors that cause employees to quit their jobs

According to a survey by Pew Research Center, the most frequents reasons mentioned in this context include wage stagnation combined with increasing costs of living, limited opportunities to further one’s career, hostile atmosphere at work, no or few benefits, non-flexible policies in terms of remote work, and a persistent lack of job satisfaction. Such circumstances have, in turn, a negative impact on the overall work-life balance and lead to a growing frustration.

How to stop employees from leaving?

There are no easy answers or cure-alls here, but some of the employee retention strategies that are definitely worth considering include giving more praise and recognition, setting clear goals and objectives, being open to bottom-up input and ideas, offering feedback, or measuring the level of satisfaction. But there also more ‘tangible’ ways, so to speak, which may involve changing the physical properties of the workplace – apart from implementing all of the above in the non-physical domain. And this means, for instance, making the workplace much more employee-friendly by providing people with features that can help them unleash their true potential and support them in their daily work. This includes proper furniture too – like work pods, which provide the user with the right amount of privacy on demand. Investing in such solutions is a sign that the company actually cares about its people, to put it bluntly.

Offer different working models

With the importance of employee retention being on the rise, it is necessary to consider all sorts of employee retention ideas that could make both the employer and the employees happy. Giving more flexibility when it comes to the possibility to work remotely may be a good starting point. Less control and supervision, more freedom and trust. Working together as partners to achieve a common goal. After all, it’s the outcome that counts, right?

Create more private spaces in the office

Some other employee retention techniques make use of refurnishing the available office space by taking into account the new, post-COVID expectations of the workplace. With the increasing demand for privacy, solutions like work pods – such as the hushHybrid – seem to be the way to go. The make great spaces for focused work, which is often what employees need when it comes to the physical aspect of their work environments.

Prevent burnout

Keep your hand on the pulse. Employee retention benefits from employers’ ability to be responsive and attentive to the ‘red flags’ that may occur in their teams. The key is to listen to what people need to perform well and try to provide them with it to enable them to have a real impact on the company’s business and prevent them from burnout in the long run.
