How to Motivate Yourself to Study: Helpful Tips

Published

on

Studying diligently is a big plus, both for self-development and a certificate or diploma. But there are times when apathy sets in, and there is not the slightest desire to learn. What to do in such a situation? What to do in such a situation? Find out how to motivate yourself to study.

Successful people differ from the rest in the presence of motivation.

No action happens without a motive, external or internal. If you’re caught in the rain on the road, you’re in a hurry to get home. The teacher asks students to write a medical school personal statement, motivating them to get a higher grade. In this case, it is an external motivation. You are free to follow it or ignore it.

Intrinsic motivation is related to personal interests and desires. For example, you do not learn biology because the teacher asked you to. However, you like this subject, and you are ready to study it independently in your free time. Our examples show that motivation is all internal and external factors that influence a person’s behavior.

Psychologists distinguish two main types of motivation:

  • motivation aimed at achieving success. The goal is to achieve something positive — for example, exam preparation to pass it with “excellent.”
  • motivation aimed at avoiding failure. The goal is to avoid trouble — for example, exam preparation to not get a “D.”

Can you feel the difference?

Which motivation is better?

The desire to succeed is healthier for us than the attitude of avoiding failure. After all, when we think about preventing something unpleasant, we willy-nilly imagine our loss. And negative emotions eat up the energy you could have spent on the goal. The same pattern works in our favor if we set ourselves up for success. Positive emotions allow us to be more productive.

There is such a thing as “tripping yourself up.” Some people tend to create obstacles to success. The person does ridiculous things and attributes the failure to them. For example: “I didn’t pass the exam because I had a fight with my teacher” or “I couldn’t study for the exam because I was at a club all night.” This is much less of a blow to self-esteem than a frank admission to oneself: “I did not pass the exam because I was not capable and diligent enough.”

Remember, you can always find a way out of a situation and come out a winner. For example, many students do not sleep for several nights doing academic assignments. Of course, the motivation in such a case falls. But there is a way out – in some cases, it is better to ask for help from essaywriter.today service instead of sacrificing the most valuable night’s sleep.

Where does motivation come from?

Motivations are directly related to human needs, which have a particular order of priority. This is well illustrated by “Maslow’s pyramid,” named after its creator-psychologist.

Until the needs of the lowest level are met, it isn’t easy to move on to the next one. Self-development and the satisfaction of cognitive needs are a psychological ”luxury. ”And, by the way, the higher the level of needs that motivate a person to work, the more productive his work is.

What is the danger of weak and excessive motivation?

If the motivation is too weak, a person works too slowly and, as a consequence, does not achieve success. And if the motivation is excessive, the effort is not so much applied to the work as it is spent on worrying about it. Much depends on how familiar the person is with the activity. Each has its optimal activation level: for simple actions, it is pretty high; and for complex ones, it is lower.

For example, to prepare for physics, you need to learn the formulas and understand the essence of physical processes. If you consider the task vital for yourself and perceive it as a source of stress, your preparation will be more productive than if you have an indifferent attitude. Simple rote cramming combined with high motivation will only hurt.

However, this law does not apply to motivation to learn something new. It is impossible to be “too greedy for knowledge.” The more insatiable such “greed” is, the more effectively further information is mastered.

Another thing is if a person is so enthusiastic about acquiring knowledge, he does not have enough time and energy to use it. This will hardly lead him to professional success.

How do you learn to motivate yourself?

To find motivation, you need to understand yourself and manage your emotions. Learn to get rid of negativity and focus on the actual tasks at hand.

The leading killer of motivation is self—doubt. Sometimes you start coming up with explanations for why you haven’t achieved something yet. Instead, give credit to what you have already achieved. Write a list of your strengths, past and present achievements. When you genuinely believe that you deserve success, your mind will create ways to achieve it.

The second motivation killer is the inability to focus. Think of how often you focus on what you don’t need instead of focusing on a specific goal. Fear-related thoughts, for example, are pretty standard. “I’m afraid I won’t get anywhere.” “I’m afraid people will think I’m stupid.” Fear feeds on itself and steals motivation from us.

The last piece in the motivational mosaic is direction. If we don’t see the next step, we start putting off action for later. Make a list of all your efforts. The first one should be uncomplicated and easy to do, and each subsequent one harder. Solving the easy tasks creates a positive mood, which makes you want to get to the end.

For example, you have a significant task – to get into college. A list of your actions may look like this:

  1. Choose a profession that you are interested in.
  2. Decide which school subjects you want to pay more attention to.
  3. Weigh up which subjects you can prepare for the exams on your own. If you need help, find a tutor, enroll in a course, or seek help from the best essay writing service to prepare a motivational letter.
  4. Consider which school subjects can help you get the highest possible score on your diploma. And yes, don’t be lazy, work for your certificate.
  5. Sign up for rehearsal testing in the subjects you want to see your initial level of preparation.
  6. While preparing for exams, study the catalog of universities to understand the passing scores and the admission plan for the specialty you are interested in.
  7. Go to the Open Day at the university of your choice.

And so on. You can extend this list. For instance, have a separate calendar and write things and tasks on the day. When you see the results of your efforts and labors, it becomes easier to motivate yourself to study. Of course, periods of low energy, failures, and even occasional lapses will appear anyway. Learn to discipline your brain. Being vigilant will keep you motivated to learn and push yourself to succeed.
